Sometimes it is easier
to pretend that the world is
sunshine and smiles
than to exist in one that is
storm clouds and tears.
So I decided to take a tough way
and live in a world that has
rainbows and satisfying tears
Sometimes it is easier

So I decided to take a tough way

Memories flitter,
but thoughts never linger
I just wish I could hold onto you
but I can’t
So I find myself staring blankly at nothing for a couple minutes
simply thinking about you
I’ve come to terms that you are leaving,
but not yet that you are not going to be here
I miss you already
Rain was in the forecast,
yet I drew in sidewalk chalk
because not all that is
must always be

Sometimes
gravity just doesn’t apply
Floating in free fall
with nowhere to fall
because not everything that goes up
comes down
when gravity just doesn’t apply
cut my tether
cut my ties
not enough oxygen for the way home
Oh man, do I have a beautiful view of home though

Here I sit
with the world at my feet
and my dreams in the sky
But where am I?
What if I
kick off my shoes
how long will they take to land?
What if I
reach out my hands
will I touch the clouds?
Or the moon?
The stars?
The sun?
Or will I get
too close?
Too close to the sun
Instead of kicking off my shoes
will they be burned off my feet?
I see
but I cannot touch
I dream
but I cannot achieve
Here I sit
with the world at my feet
and my dreams in the sky
But where am I?
He built armor for himself
but when does
armor cease to be armor
and begin to be a prison?
Inspired by Jules Verne’s line in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
“Yes,” I murmured, “we know how to die.”
Yes, we know how to die
on battle fields
in hospital beds
from buildings
in acts of cowardice
in acts of regret
in acts of sacrifice
with love
with fear
with hope
Yes, we know how to die
the question then becomes
how do we live?
That will determine
how we die.
The single glance
conveyed a thousand
wandering,
wondering,
thoughts.
The single glance
lasted for only the briefest of seconds
but told the stories of lifetimes.
The single glance
between two eyes
between two closed mouths
between two faces
between two people
told the stories of thousands
with a single glance.
Our eyes have adapted
From seeing landscapes and hunting animals
From seeing paper and writing in ink
to now seeing screens and tapping on them.
The question posed to us,
as individuals.
is if we can keep up
with the rest of society
by adapting.
