Better

Oh how time distorts memories

how we distort memories

an old friend is always kinder

Grandma’s pie is always sweeter

the sand always softer

the past away relative always nicer

the sun always brighter

Oh how memories are exaggerated

memories turn reality into extremes

the winter always colder

the childhood vegetable tastes always worse

the pain of a fall always greater

the heat of a sunburn always hotter

the tears always saltier

the basement always scarier

Yet if we were to go back

and try it

or see it

or feel it

again

it would not be as good

or as bad.

the chocolate birthday cake does not taste as rich

the Christmas tree does not shine as bright

the hill was not as steep

the valley not as wide

Our memories brush over what we do not want to remember

we only remember the perfections and not the imperfections

or we only remember the imperfections and not the perfections

we choose what we remember.

But which is better

the memories or the memories we make?

Remember

Sometimes we get caught up in family, cook outs, the day off work; that we forget about what today really means. A day to remember, cherish, and thank our service men and women who allow us to have and keep these freedoms. Now, since I have not served, I want to share some quotes of those who have.

A Veteran Is Someone Who, at one point, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for an amount of ‘up to and including their life.’ That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.

I don’t have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch, or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world.

Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.

Yet Not Forgotten: A Rondeau Poem

Something that ends in memory

Is something that I do not wish to be

Asking, begging, forget me. Please?

Remembered for person, not for glories

Not for great world acts, personally, me

Over lifetime being, salute to me

Minutes of fame do not define ably

Softly in heart, not bravely in stories

Of me, yet not forgotten

Remember weakness, doubts, getting by

Not public image, life looking glossy

I’m fragile flower, not glowing rubies

Recall me in whispers, not glees

Common girl, not celebrity

Of me, yet not forgotten
