Life Actress Number One

I recently received 642 Tiny Things to Write About and I will try to post some of my responses to the prompts. Here is one: Describe something about your best friend that is often under-appreciated.

You and I have a running joke that you are “Life Actress Number One”

When life isn’t awesome

you don’t let it show

you entertain others with your lively stories

you encourage others with your joyful smile

you let others escape into a world of puns and clever comebacks

you tell others that the world and their lives will be okay

You put on a performance

and dance

and sing

and listen

and hug

and joke

for others,

without letting them see behind the movie screen.

Yet when life is a one-way street,

of only encouraging others,

who encourages you?

Who tells you that the world and your life is going to be okay?

Who gives you a hug?

Who listens to you?

Who smiles for you?

I will and I always will.

I am thankful that I am one of few lucky people

who can see behind the silver screen

who you can tell your crazy life to

who you can trust

who you do not have to entertain

(but I always like it) 🙂

I am thankful that

you are not an actress in our friendship

that we are unscripted.

After Now

Why is it that I find your beauty

now, so enticing?

Why now, and not before?

Why is it that you were a mere commonality before,

but now, you are gloriously enrapturing,

heart-breaking and heart-warming

Have my eyes changed?

Have you changed?

Have you transformed from a single glance

to a forever – yet ever to short -of a gaze?

Or is it me?

***

There is a painting of a ship at sea

on my office wall

I have seen it everyday for as long as I can remember

but now, after all these years

do I finally realized how beautiful it is.

I finally appreciate it.

Why now, and not before?

I have read countless books about

sailors

boats

the sea

explorers and whalers

I have learned countless history lessons about events with sailors and boats

I have seen countless movies about the sea

I have read personal accounts concerning explorers and whalers

I have ridden the open waves with no land in sight

I have stared into that sinister, powerful, murky depth

and I have stared into those mystical, lapping, crashing ocean waves

In every sense I’ve been in that painting

but until now, it was just a painting,

but after now, it has its own life

own story

own tears to cry

own cheers to shout

own dead to bury

own lips to smile

own love to find

After now, it is not just something to look at

but something to be a part of

Why now, and not before

do I love you?

Because I finally understand you

and I know that I never truly can either

For the Sake of

In movies

You lose the quality of the written word

the sweet, sweet literary devices

for the sake of visualization

You lose the narrative capability

for the sake of an actor’s actions

You lose the leisure and digestive qualities

for the sake of “Next scene!”

No time to stop

or you’ll miss something new

no time to ponder on something old

You lose control

for the sake of living in someone else’s rapidly expanding imagination

In novels

You lose the rawness of an action

for the sake of recording the movement

You lose the transformation of emotion

for the sake of the categorization of a feeling

You lose the flow motion

for the sake of a mis-configured reader’s imagination

You lose the purity of a glance

for the sake of qualifying it

Sometimes words can do no justice

for what only motion can

This is why life should not be lived in movies or books

but in the act of living

Movies and books can only be enjoyed

once they have a life to build upon
