Celebrate Their Sacrifice

The wind whipped my hair

as well as the dog hair

that was stuck to my swim suit

Water (or maybe dog drool)

sprayed on my face

as the speed boat raced across the waves

As I pet the dog

and looked out on the blue horizon

I thought, “This is life”

***

We celebrate the day

that initiated a five year war

and cost hundreds of lives

with fireworks and parties and hamburgers

with speed boats and late nights and music

because we are honoring the men and women

who fought for our freedom

by enjoying our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness

We do not only mourn their deaths

but we honor and celebrate their sacrifice

because freedom should be something to sing and dance about

freedom should be celebrated with family and friends

Along with the flag,

our symbols of freedom should be

smiling faces and satisfied hearts

because I am proud to be an American

We the People

We the people

thus began and begins

the Constitution of the United States of America

We the people

sign our names and commit to

serve our country

have, do, and will

fight for liberty on a battlefield

fight for the law in a court room

fight for rights in a nursing home

fight for neighbors in Congress

We the people

have, do, and will

give hope to those without

give dignity to those without

give work to those without

give life to those without

give to those without

We the people

have, do, and will

work the common good

for unity

for justice

for protection

for welfare

for liberty

We the People

We the People

We the People

have died

Please don’t be offended.

Then, again,

be offended,

if necessary

The ideals of our forefathers

The work of our servicemen and women

The sacrifice of our leaders

has been tarnished by our acts

or lack of acts

We the People

have died

Me the Person

has taken their place

The United States of America

founded on liberty and unity

cannot stand

when we are no longer United States

and instead

self-centered individuals who have to deal with others to get what we want

We the People

have died

***

Please

prove me wrong

show me that

We the People

lives

Please

for we cannot keep on standing on the successes of yesterday

if we are going to face tomorrow

we cannot stand on history alone

if we are going to have victory in the future

Please

prove me wrong

We the People

We the People

We the People

If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all.

My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
