Responsibility

Inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “Theme for English B”

I like comic books, words, my twin sister, and hats

Superior Spider-man is my favorite superhero

This is true

This is surface

things I’d tell you when I first meet you

but this poem is about me

and not you

so let me continue

There are things we all try to hide

But we don’t aren’t

going to focus on that side

I have been given great power

Yes, listen to the arrogance in that

That I have a better life than others

That I have food and water and shelter

I know where I’m going to lay my head each night

I know how to read and write and do arithmetic

Yes, it is arrogant to say I have a better life

When in all actuality

That “great power” I spoke of

Should be a commonality

I cannot truly understand know the experiences of

those who do not share my security

But to them I do have a responsibility

to be the best that I can be

I have been entrusted with much

and much will be demanded of me

With great power

must also

Come great responsibility

I work and serve for that which endures

For indeed I have come to serve

To serve those that do not have what I have

Who do not have the hope I have

The hope I have placed on an old wooden Cross

Two thousand years ago

My greatest power

Is that of my Lord’s love and salvation

This is my motivation

This is true

This I will not hide

I will speak of this side

Because We Have To

A few days ago,  I was really feeling down

I wasn’t my bubbly self and I haven’t written creatively in a few days

I had a busy weekend coming up that I needed to be myself.

I had a few hours after I had finished my work and before I had to run off somewhere

so I wrote a chapter my novel and couldn’t stop

within three hours I wrote 1550 words

it just started spilling out of me and my fingers were foxtrotting across the keyboard.

After I finished,

I was full of energy again and back to myself.

I think I had so many words that needed to come out that they were literally weighing me down

I write because I like to and because I have something to say,

but also because I have to.

Today I was rereading my second favorite book and it fit perfectly:

“What I’m trying to say is some people do things because they feel they have to. Some people paint pictures or make sculptures because they want to. They choose to do it. But some people do it because they feel that’s what they must do. . . . [Creating art or writing] it’s the only way they know how to make sense of themselves and the only way they can make sense of life. It’s the only way they know how to say something about themselves and about life they feel they need to say. . . . Strikes me you’re saying you do it to keep yourself alive.”

Brushing My Teeth

I love to brush my teeth for a long time

I mean, a long time

because that means

I have time

to brush my teeth for a long time

I have time

waste spend on simple things joys

I can think

I can daydream

I can move slowly

I can pet my dog

I can look around

I can read the Bible verses on my dresser

I love to brush my teeth for a long time

and I love to have time

brushing teeth
